Shamir Launches Glacier Plus™
Independent test results give Glacier Plus the lowest reflection rating
Shamir Optical Industry Ltd today launched Shamir Glacier Plus, an innovative AR coating that increases light transmittance and reduces glare and ghost reflections.
“Glacier Plus improves optical performance and cosmetic appearance, providing wearers with a natural look without unwanted reflections,” according to Zohar Katzman, Shamir’s R&D Coating Manager.
Tests performed on high-index 1.67 lenses showed that Glacier Plus had the lowest reflection rate of the five coatings tested — 9% lower than its nearest competitor. NSL Analytical, an independent laboratory in the United States approved by the Vision Council of America, performed the test.
Bayer Ratio tests undertaken at NSL and Colts Laboratories also showed Glacier Plus to be 20-30% stronger than its nearest competitor. “This extremely hard, scratch-resistant coating also has abrasion resistance values 3.5 times higher than the market standard, providing outstanding scratch protection and ensuring enhanced lens durability,” says Katzman.
Glacier Plus’ enhanced hydrophobic and antistatic properties offer major benefits. Glacier Plus’ super hydrophobic properties were put to the test at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology. It achieved an extremely high contact angle of 120°. Tests performed at Colts Laboratories also showed that the angle is 4-6° higher than competitors. “Due to its super hydrophobic properties, it resists water and stains and repels grease and fingerprints, which makes cleaning lenses quicker and easier. In addition, the coating’s powerful antistatic properties ensure lenses remain free of dust, so lenses stay cleaner longer,” he says.
Suitable for all lens types, Glacier Plus protects lenses from damage during day-to-day use. “Glacier Plus offers enhanced comfort and protection,” comments Katzman, adding that Shamir’s confidence in the efficacy of its new coating is backed by an extended warranty.
